M03 — Constraints as causes
Time: ~50–70 min · Depends on: M02 · Unlocks: M04–M07 (central module)
The idea in one minute
Constraints are causal. They need not push like billiard balls. They reshape which states are possible and which are likely. Some constraints mainly restrict; some enable new collective behaviors. Context is largely which constraints are in play. This is Juarrero’s core constructive claim.
Why this matters
Once constraints count as causes, you can talk about grammar, joints, feedback loops, vessel geometry, roles, and protocols as doing real causal work — without inventing spooky forces. That unlocks identity, coherence, and organization in later modules.
Core teaching
1. What a constraint does
A constraint modifies:
- Phase space — which states are accessible, and/or
- Probabilities — which accessible states are likely
A knee joint, a bottle shape, a grammar rule, a catalyst’s geometry, a feedback loop — all constrain without needing to be cue-ball impacts.
2. Double duty: limit and enable
Constraining letter frequencies or phoneme sequences reduces local freedom — and thereby enables words, sentences, and vast message variety.
So: “constraint” is not only “ban.” Enabling constraints generate higher-level coordination by weaving interdependencies or lowering barriers so new collective dynamics can appear.
3. A first taxonomy (keep it light)
| Kind | Intuition |
|---|---|
| Context-independent | Changes overall odds without full interdependence (letter frequencies, many gradients) |
| Context-dependent | Couples parts; conditional probabilities; history matters |
| Enabling | Bottom-up generative — helps a new whole-pattern appear |
| Constitutive | The interlocking relations that are the organization |
| Governing / control | Top-down regulation that keeps the whole viable |
You will refine these in M04–M06. For now: constraints sculpt dynamics.
4. Top-down without magic
Once enabling constraints create interdependencies, the resulting architecture can govern parts — vessels canalize blood flow without adding the heart’s energy; laser coherence “slaves” modes. Control is distributed constraint satisfaction, not an extra energy ghost.
5. Everyday examples
- Language: rules restrict combinations → enable meaning
- Road roundabout: geometry + norms → emergent flow pattern
- Team protocol: limited message formats → large-scale coordination
- Skeleton/joints: restrict motion → enable reliable walking
Must-get summary
- Constraints reshape possibility and probability — that is causal work
- They limit and enable
- Enabling → generative; constitutive/governing → what the whole is and how it stays viable
- Context ≈ the constraint structure in play

Check questions
- Example of a restricting effect of a constraint.
- Example of an enabling effect (same domain if you can).
- How does “constraint causes” differ from “force causes”?
- Why doesn’t top-down constraint require a supernatural push?
If you’re stuck
Return to the language example: fewer free letter strings → more useful messages. Restriction at one level, capacity at another.
