Constitutive constraint

One-liner: Interlocking constraints that are the organization of a whole — what makes it that kind of system.

In Juarrero’s usage

Once enabling constraints generate a coherent dynamic, constitutive relations hold it as a type. They often double as governing constraints. Mereology: wholes as architectures of constraint, not mystical blobs.

Not to confuse with

  • Legal “constitution” only
  • A single boss rule

Everyday example

The rule-set + board + piece interactions that constitute “chess” rather than a bag of wooden objects.
