Phase space (possibility space)

One-liner: The abstract space of possible states a system can occupy; constraints sculpt which regions are open and likely.

In Juarrero’s usage

Constraints modify phase space (accessibility) and/or the probability distribution over states. Thinking in phase space lets causes work by reshaping possibilities, not only by impacts inside an unchanged space.

Not to confuse with

  • Physical room volume only
  • A literal map you must draw mathematically to use the idea

Everyday example

A chess position’s “possibility space” of legal moves is constrained by rules and piece geometry — long before any particular capture “pushes” another piece.
