Restricting constraint

One-liner: The aspect of constraint that reduces local degrees of freedom — closes off some possibilities.

In Juarrero’s usage

Restriction is half the story. The same structure that restricts (phoneme inventory, joint angles) often enables higher-level function. Prefer thinking “double duty” rather than pure negatives.

Not to confuse with

  • The whole meaning of “constraint” in Juarrero
  • Punishment or oppression only (those can be constraints, but the term is wider)

Everyday example

A password policy restricts character choices; a skeleton restricts limb paths so walking is reliable.
