Membrane (interface / boundary)
One-liner: A boundary that filters and transduces — not merely a wall that blocks.
In Juarrero’s usage
Boundaries demarcate systems by selective coupling: cells, eardrums, org interfaces, APIs. Rate differences can also bound systems without brick walls. Design implication: engineer membranes, not only fortresses.
Not to confuse with
- Absolute isolation
- Pure open flooding with no filter
Everyday example
A product API: only some messages pass, transformed into internal actions — collaboration without total merge.
