The idea in one minute
A complex whole hangs together as a coherence: a persistent pattern of matter/energy/information flow generated and maintained by constraints. Identity is not a hidden essence; it is the signature of a constraint regime through turnover (Ship of Theseus). Closure names loops that make the pattern self-maintaining.
Why this matters
This is how Juarrero rehabilitates wholes without magic and intentions without pellets. “What is this system?” becomes “what constraint regime is running?”
Core teaching
1. Coherence
Coherence = persistent, constrained flow patterns — lasers, convection, ecosystems, economies, cultures, homeostasis. Parts remain individuals while becoming interactants under a regime. Wholes are not fusions that erase parts.
2. Identity as regime signature
Planks of the ship change; the organizational pattern can persist. Identity ≈ the probability landscape / adaptive topography that continues through material turnover — not an immutable inner nugget.
3. Closure family (simple version)
Once catalysts and feedback weave processes together, several related “closures” appear in CCE:

You don’t need every subtype. Need: self-maintaining loops of constraints/processes explain autonomy better than “uncaused will” or “only micro-pushes.”
4. Persistence
Far-from-equilibrium patterns that keep themselves going are central. Selection-by-persistence complements gene-level stories without reducing all explanation to efficient-cause collisions.
5. Bridge to intention (DiA)
An intention can be read as a top-down, context-sensitive constraint / attractor that continuously reshapes behavioral probabilities so action actualizes meaningful content. That is claim C006 territory.
